Stephen Bishop

Stephen Bishop is the monthly humor columnist for Bee Culture magazine, in which he often writes about his misadventures in farming and beekeeping. In 2013, he and his wife bought her family’s old farmstead in Shelby, NC, where he attempts, often comically, to farm. For his day job, he works at his local agriculture office, where has met many outstanding farmers, a few middling to fair, and out or two outright scoundrels—the latter making the best fodder for funny farm stories.
Stephen has degrees in English and Forestry, and his writing has appeared in numerous publications, including Grit, Acres USA, Hobby Farms, Southeast Farm Press, Bee Culture, Country, American Bee Journal, Out Here, South Carolina Wildlife, and The Small Farmer’s Journal. In 2023, Stephen Bishop was shortlisted for the “Best in Rural Writing Award” by the Milk House Rural Writers Collective. When Stephen isn’t chasing escaped livestock around, he is usually trying to corral his son, who now runs faster than a speeding pig and is growing faster than pigweed. Any free time he has is often spent with his wife working on home improvement projects, of which there is no shortage, considering their old family farmhouse was built in 1897.
