Romeo Montero is a Mexican illustrator based in NYC with a deep love for children’s literature. He earned his BFA in Illustration from Moore College of Art & Design in 2024 and has since collaborated with nonprofit publishers to bring board and picture books to life, in addition to creating high-concept advertisements for select clients. The first picture book he illustrated, published in 2023, was honored as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection. His artwork has also been exhibited in New York, Ohio, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Romeo creates diverse, vivid, and emotionally expressive artwork grounded in authenticity. His adaptable style allows him to shift between visual approaches while maintaining the personality and narrative depth that distinguish his voice. He is passionate about creating stories that celebrate representation, inclusion, and, above all, the everyday normalcy of difference. With a particular soft spot for weird kids, he draws from lived experiences including neurodiversity and queerness to create artwork that helps young readers feel seen. When he is not illustrating, he can be found collecting CDs, attending metal and punk shows, or binge-reading manga. Romeo continues to build a dynamic body of work across children’s literature, from early childhood formats to middle grade and young adult graphic novels.
