Karen L. Sullivan

Karen Sullivan is a former ship captain, biologist, high school science teacher and federal agency spokesperson with more than 60 published essays and articles. During the George W. Bush administration, she wrote briefing materials for three cabinet secretaries and two U.S. Presidents, and was interviewed by every major print, broadcast, and wire service in the U.S. and eight foreign countries. But she also whistleblew anonymously to The New York Times for three years because of the corruption and capture of federal climate policy by oil interests that she witnessed at the Interior Department. Her book about this experience, titled True Doubt: A Deep State Journey, is on submission.

Karen’s work has been featured in the Stonecoast Review, Wooden Boat, Belladonna Comedy, and more. After leaving federal service, Karen sailed her 24-foot boat from Alaska to New Zealand because she wanted to know what it felt like to sail over the curvature of the Earth, preferably gently. She is at work on a new book about the history and biology of the Pacific Ocean as seen from the deck of a small boat in the middle of it.
