Colleen Alles is a native Michigander, award-winning writer, and Charlotte Brontë superfan. Her most recent books include The Hound of Thornfield High (Conquest Publishing, 2024), a retelling of Jane Eyre for a young adult audience, and the poetry collection Bonfires & Other Vigils (Red Rook Press, 2024). Her debut short story collection, Close to a Flame, was released in March 2025 (Cornerstone Press) and was a finalist for an NIEA Award. Colleen’s work has been longlisted for the Fugere Book Prize for Finely Crafted Novellas (Regal House Publishing). Her fiction and poetry have appeared in Red Cedar Review, Tar River Poetry, The Michigan Poet, and other places.
Colleen is a graduate of Michigan State University (BA) and Wayne State University (MLIS). Currently, she’s pursuing her MFA at Spalding University. She works for Atmosphere Press as a Developmental Editor, and as a fiction editor with Barren Magazine. When she isn’t reading, writing, or watching The Bachelor, Colleen enjoys distance running and doting on her beagle, Charlie. She lives in Michigan with her husband and two children. Colleen is represented by Jenna Satterthwaite. Publications
