Ayishah Hasni is a young adult fantasy author from the Canadian Prairies. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature (Hons.) with a concentration in Creative Writing from the University of Calgary and is starting her Master’s in English Literature at McGill University in the Fall. She currently works as a research assistant at the University of Calgary where she specializes in Shakespearean adaptation studies.
Ayishah fondly remembers reading the Thousand and One Nights as a young child before bed, which evolved into a passion for writing folk and fairy tale retellings from the East. In particular, her undergraduate studies led her to develop a strong interest in Islamic history, civilizations, and orature, all of which greatly influence her work. She believes in the importance of diversity, inclusion, and ethical representation in literature above all else, and is especially dedicated to uplifting Muslim voices in speculative fiction. Ayishah grew up in Ottawa, and when not attending school in the bustling heart of Montreal, she resides in Calgary where the Rocky Mountains can be seen in the distance. If she’s not writing, she can be found visiting used bookstores in order to add to her vast collection of vintage copies of the Thousand and One Nights, watching a classic Disney movie, or curled up with a book beside her fluffy orange cat, Willow.
