Amy Selstad

Amy Selstad is an illustrator based in St. Louis, where she earned her MFA in Illustration from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts in 2026. She specializes in book covers, picture books, chapter books, comics, and graphic novels.
Wondrous, mystical, and richly nuanced, Amy’s work centers on immersive world-building and multifaceted characters. She uses expressive details to reveal personality and perspective. Working in digital illustration, watercolor, and pencil, she brings warmth and individuality to human characters, animals, and imagined creatures. Her work is especially suited to fiction, fantasy, adventure, historical narratives, and coming-of-age stories. Before completing her graduate studies, Amy taught middle school art, an experience that gave her firsthand insight into what resonates with children and supports their development. She later served as an Assistant in Instruction at Sam Fox. During her time there, she participated in the Pixar Story Workshop, co-organized a mural for a local children’s bookstore, and served as a committee member of the Illustration & Visual Culture Picture Book Club. Amy has been honored as an SCBWI Student Illustrator Scholarship recipient, a GDUSA Student to Watch 2025 selectee, an Illustration West 63 featured artist by the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, an American Illustration 44 winner, and a recipient of the Walt Reed Award for Excellence in Writing on Visual Culture. Outside the studio, Amy is an active SCBWI member who listens to ancient history podcasts and explores fascinating museum collections and artifacts online. Awards & Recognitions:
